Backlinks - Some explanation needed

To check backlinks in google i used to enter "link:www.mydomain.com"
and it list on 7 and if i enter "link : www.mydomain.com" it list about 37.
what is the correct way to check backlinks with different search engines.
Ofcourse i know several link_popularity_check tools. All display results according to their data centers.

I just use the google method you've mentioned above. I didn't realise you could get two different results??

link:example.com is the right thing to use(without spaces). You might want to get SEopen as one of your extension, it is one of the firefox add ons and you can check your backlinks for google, yahoo and msn.

link:http://yoursite.com
OR,
link:http://www.yoursite.com

whichever version of your site is active
Also use yahoo to track back links, as google does not list all the back links.

the true search way for your backlink is your first type . you must search without space

Now you don't need any specific tool to check your backlinks. You can find out your backlinks from Google webmaster tool. Go there and click on your site you will able to see "Links" section there.

Most people use linkURL). I hear that the words www something dot com and something dot com are indexed differently. Perhaps thats why you had two diferent results; probably from two different DCs.

Or you queried the same server but got different results because of parameters used.
