Apache Help?!

I have currently tried installing Apache 2.2 and lower versions and have Xampp installed now. I get the page showing installation is successful IT WORKS!! but when I try to view the server to test it >>> //localhost or 127.0.0.1 I keep getting a 404 error or a DNS error, I have disabled my firewall on my router.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Did you add an index page to the www directory?

modem setup > firewall > and port of number 80 is a enabled
